My name is May and welcome to the shop page for Michigan LeatherWorks. I specialize in hand made leather accessories for hunting and firearms. Everything I make is produced by hand. I do NOT use machines in my work. I start with a side of a vegetable tanned cowhide and procede to cut, dye, tool, antique, burnish, finish and sew all by hand. No two pieces are the same. Each piece will have its own unique characteristics.
My shop is on its 5th year in 2023. I started my venture in leatherwork due to a work incident that required me to find a new career path. I was a Registered Nurse for approximately 7 years and with the intense work of lifting people I ruptured discs in my back and was paralyzed from the waist down for 2 1/2 years. I have since been able to get myself back to a place where I can walk and live life again but permanently unable to do nursing work.
My grandfather was a mastercraftsman, making all sorts of artisian wooden products. With his passing I inherited many tools that assisted me towards my future in leatherwork. Thanks to him, I am able to continue to support my child and find a new career where i can provide for my family and be creative. Every piece I make is in homage of his inspiration. I spend my time going to craft shows and gun shows. I meet so many wonderfully kind and amazing people in our travels. I hope to meet you at one of our events.
